Inside an MCB
Two trips in one device
A miniature circuit breaker combines a slow thermal trip for overloads with an instant magnetic trip for short circuits, then extinguishes the resulting arc inside a stack of steel plates.

Bimetallic plate
Thermal trip — bends as it heats under a sustained overload (1.13–1.45 × In) and releases the mechanism after a delay.

Coil (electromagnet)
Magnetic trip — a short-circuit current pulls the plunger instantly, within 0.1 s, at 3–20 × In depending on the curve.

Arcing chamber
Stacked de-ion plates split and cool the arc drawn as the contacts open, letting the breaker interrupt up to 6 kA safely.

Silver-alloy contacts that carry the load current and part quickly when the latch releases.

Tripping curves
B, C or D — matching the curve to the load
All BD1-63 breakers share the same thermal characteristic; the letter sets how much surge current the magnetic trip tolerates before it releases instantly.
Below the band a breaker relies on its thermal element and trips after a delay; above it the magnetic coil trips in under 0.1 s. A higher letter tolerates more inrush before tripping.

Conductor sizing
Match the cable to the breaker
The breaker rating must never exceed what the cable can carry. The datasheet pairs each BD1-63 rating with a minimum copper cross-section.
Applicable conducting wire
Nominal copper conductor cross-section for each rated current, as specified in the BD1-63 datasheet.
Long runs, high ambient temperatures and grouped cables reduce a conductor’s capacity — step up a size when in doubt, and use the MCB selector above for a quick starting point.
AC versus DC
Why solar needs DC-rated protection
Direct current never passes through zero, so an arc drawn by opening contacts does not self-extinguish. DC devices are built differently — and rated per pole.
Poles add voltage
The BD1-63Z is rated 250 V DC per pole: wire poles in series for 500 V (2P), 750 V (3P) or 1000 V (4P) strings.
Polarity matters
DC breakers carry + and − markings. Connect the string in the direction shown so the arc chamber works as designed.
Isolate and protect
Use the BD-100Z as a padlockable main isolator at the inverter, and fit an SB-2040PV surge protector to clamp lightning-induced spikes below 4 kV.

The letter is the tripping curve and the number is the rated current in amperes. A C32 trips instantly between 5 and 10 times 32 A (160–320 A) on a short circuit, and after a delay on smaller overloads. B curves trip at 3–5 × In and D curves at 10–20 × In.
